The factory of the future is becoming a reality

The future is taking shape: the most innovative and successful companies and institutes from the high-tech supply industry in the Brainport region will come together as a single powerful entity on the Brainport Industries Campus in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. “We are going to create a factory of the future here with the best minds and resources. It is going to be a magnet for customers, talent and innovation”, explains Erik Vermeulen, Innovation and Business Development Manager. “The groundwork has been laid, and we want to start operations at the beginning of 2018”, adds John Blankendaal, Managing Director of the supply network Brainport Industries. The concept behind the Brainport Industries Campus will be showcased at the Dutch Pavilion at Hannover Messe.

Leading research institutes and renowned companies will work together at the Brainport Industries Campus in order to turn ideas into reality and develop business cases. The first companies will relocate to the campus at the end of 2017. They reflect the high-tech supply chain and are specialists in the fields of manufacturing, logistics and technology. However, education institutes, start-ups and several manufacturing support companies will also be moving to the innovative campus.

Improving performance
Together, the responsible parties will be pursuing five fundamental goals, which have been termed “the BIC way” illustrating that this is a collaborative project. “By ensuring that everyone is based in one single physical location, we want to work together to improve the performance of the companies and supply chains”, says Vermeulen. Secondly, he mentions the social responsibility that all the participants will bear together. The campus should also attract and foster new talent and help to retain that talent in the region. Furthermore, innovative products should be implemented and added value for potential customers should be increased.

What’s more, marketing and business development strengths should be pooled so as to increase visibility. “We want to be able to communicate as a global brand yet at the same time hold on to our own identities”, says Vermeulen.

Flexible manufacturing
In order to be able to really achieve the goals set, one thing that Brainport Industries Campus is planning is a factory of the future. It will be a large-scale manufacturing environment accessible 24 hours a day. According to Vermeulen, it will stand out from other initiatives on account of the following characteristics: the production halls will be housed in a smart building with extensive modular adaptability ready for the future. The production equipment will be shared in order to jointly improve productivity.

Smart logistics, which will also be shared, will ensure improved operational performance amongst the companies. In addition, the digital factory will supply information on products and processes in real time. “What is particularly important to us is the flexible arrangement. This will enable us to increase or reduce manufacturing capacity at short notice where necessary”, explains Blankendaal.

The concept behind the Brainport Industries Campus was developed five years ago in industry and implemented by members of Brainport Industries. The following parties are responsible for the campus: SDK Vastgoed (real estate), Brainport Industries, the Province of Noord-Brabant, BOM (the Brabant Development Agency) and the City of Eindhoven. The campus is currently still under construction. It should cover a total area of 200 hectares, a third of which will consist of five large cluster buildings. The space around the buildings is integrated with the green, wooded area of the new city park Brainport Park[T1] . The first sections, accounting for 61,000 m² of the floor space, should be built this year. The total floor space of this first building will subsequently be approx. 100,000 m².
