The supply chain of the future

Thanks to its fully automated machining centre, CLT Metal Service can fulfil customers’ requirements with pinpoint accuracy. Based on its Smart Metal Shaping concept, the company can supply customised, defect-free round and profile tubes quickly, efficiently and nimbly for the food, chemicals and mechanical engineering industries. Together with its customers and suppliers, CLT Metal Service is now taking things to the next level and setting up the supply chain of the future. Current reference projects and the growing number of regular customers prove that the company is on the right track.

It is said that CLT Metal Service, located in Horst, the Netherlands, operates one of the most modern laser machining centres in Europe – an investment which benefits its customers and translates into real money for the company. “Processing and lead times are becoming more and more important”, says Sales Manager Hans Kempen. These days, projects need to be turned around within short timeframes, and that’s exactly where the company saves its customers time and money.

Proven quality
This is how CLT Metal Service managed, for example, to supply 1,288 aluminium tube parts within just a few weeks for the stage of the Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna using its 3D tube laser cutting machine – every individual tube was tailored to a specific length. As such, the company helped to create a remarkable and unusual suspended construction for the globally televised music competition.

Versatility is the name of the game at this Dutch company: CLT Metal Service manufactured 2,600 metres of tubes weighing 140,000 kilograms for a framework roof construction. The perfectly machined materials were with the customer in just three weeks – mission accomplished.

For another order, 144 metres of container profiles from stainless steel measuring 400 x 400 x 8 millimetres had to be straightened – all with a straightness tolerance of two millimetres over a length of seven metres. The profiles were straightened and the necessary holes were made within just three days.

Shorter lead times
The fully automated machining centre for round and profile tubes measuring 14 metres in length and with a maximum diameter of 610 millimetres helps the company to save a huge amount of time (see diagram).

However, it’s not just short lead times that are decisive for customers. The considerable materials savings achieved through the clever use of fully automated 3D tube laser cutting machines also pay off. All in all, CLT Metal Service is able to considerably reduce the Total Cost of Ownership.

CLT Metal Service can cater for all sorts of customer requirements making a wide variety of new design options possible. “For example, we can join tubes and metal sheets together, prepare connectors and introduce notches at precise specified points”, says Kempen. The design is prepared exactly in 3D on the computer and the product is fine-tuned with the customer right down to the tiniest of details. Customers already begin to receive advice during the engineering phase.

Last year, CLT Metal Service made another investment for the sake of its customers. The 3D tube laser cutting machine’s programming was updated, whereby IFC files from Tekla Structures software can be automatically converted into cutting files.

Individual units or series production
What’s more, this is all possible with an error rate of virtually zero. That’s because each unit, for example made of stainless steel or carbon steel, is machined exactly identically on account of the digital templates. “No matter whether we manufacture two or 2,000 units.” 100% reproducibility is standard at CTL Metal Service.

Contributing ideas in the planning phase for new products, shorter welding and cutting processes, and materials savings achieved through the clever use of machines are all part and parcel of the supply chain of the future for CLT Metal Service, and the company plans to convince visitors at Hannover Messe of the same.
