Opportunities from Additive Manufacturing for high-tech products and equipment

Compared to conventional (=subtractive) manufacturing technology, additive manufacturing (AM) can bring multiple advantages, such as: freedom of shape, topology optimization, customized products, integration of parts, variable part density, … In practice  however these opportunities are largely unknown and therefore not often used. One of the reasons for this is that AM requires a different approach than conventional manufacturing technology, while most design engineers are educated in a traditional way. Additional  education in the field of AM is a must. This presentation will show you a number of successful examples of redesigned parts for AM for your inspiration.

Optimierung einer additiv gefertigten Leichtbau-Plattform für einen selbstbalancierenden Elektroroller
Jan Grasmannsdorf, Altair Engineering | Manuel Ramsaier, Hochschule Ravensburg-Weingarten

Referenten der Hochschule Ravensburg-Weingarten und von Altair zeigen die Entwicklung und Optimierung einer additiv gefertigten Plattform für einen selbstbalancierenden Elektroroller. Die Plattformstruktur integriert mehrere Funktionen und Bauteile, wie die Motoren, die Batterie und die Kabelführungen. Mit automatisiert erstellten digitalen Modellen und Optimierungssimulation als Gestaltungswerkzeug konnte die Entwicklung und Herstellung eines Prototyps von vier Wochen auf vier Tage verkürzt werden.

Der Elektroroller basiert auf Ergebnissen des Forschungsprojekts „Digitaler Produktlebenszyklus“ der Hochschulen Weingarten und der Universität Stuttgart.

Lightweight Optimization of an Additively Manufactured Platform for a Self Balancing Scooter

The presentation has a focus on the development of an additively manufactured platform for a self-balancing scooter. The platform integrates several functions and parts, like battery and motor housing, gears and cable wirings. All structures were included in an optimized compact lightweight structure, based on automated digital models and optimization simulations. Production of the self-balancing scooter prototype was reduced from four weeks to four days with additive technologies, equating to time-savings of 85%.

The presentation is based on a research project “Digitaler Produktlebenszyklus” of the “Zentrum für angewandte Forschung” in Weingarten and Stuttgart / Germany
